Your Career-Defining Attitude

On March 4, WiBF held the latest instalment of our Brand You webinar series: Your Career-Defining Attitude. Our special guest speaker was Karen Schmidt, career coach, author, and keynote speaker.

Have you ever wondered how much power your attitude has over your success in your career? In truth, attitude is everything. In this 30-minute discussion, Karen spoke about what attitudes you should have, as well as how to spot unhelpful thoughts that act like a ‘spanner in the works’ and stop you from reaching your full potential.

In her talk, Karen detailed 5 attitudes that are conducive to career progression and satisfaction:

  1. Mastering Change: To do well in your career, it is important to not only deal with change, but embrace change, and use it as an opportunity to adapt and expand your skill set. It is also great when you can initiate change yourself. Do you have an idea that can make the running of your workplace more efficient? Make your thoughts known!
  2. Think Self-Employed: The best way to take ownership of your own career journey is to think like you are the boss. People who have an ‘employee mindset’ are more likely to wait for tasks, and just do what their manager tells them. If you think like the business you work for is your own, you are more likely to think abstractly in terms of problem solving, and take initiative when you see areas that could be improved or optimised.
  3. Manage Your Career: Karen reminded us that our career is our own responsibility, and that we should be in the driver’s seat of our own career path. Using her career changes as an example, she told us to follow our passions and not let yourself get stuck in a ‘dead-end’ job.
  4. Promote Yourself: According to Karen, it is common for people (especially women) to shy away from talking about their good points in a career setting, for fear of sounding arrogant or boastful (“tall poppy syndrome”). However, it is essential to acknowledge your own strengths not only for others to know of your worth, but for you to believe in yourself.
  5. Lifelong Learning: No matter where you are in your career or how much experience you have, there is always more to know. For example, as technology changes, so does the way many people do things. As new research emerges, thought patterns and values change. As nothing stays the same, no one can know everything. Making an effort to continually learn new things is a positive commitment indeed.
