Advice From Our President On Your Personal Productivity

Welcome to the 2019 work year! Whether you’re just returned from leave or have been working through January, there is no mistaking the fact that our working lives are back in top gear - queues in the lift wells and craziness on the roads are two of the tell-tale signs. 

While I've never been much of a fan of  new year’s resolutions, I usually find myself thinking about what the year will hold. This year, I’ve been fortunate enough to do my contemplating from the blissfully cold and snowy landscapes of Canada. I’m not exactly a summer person, so it’s been mentally and physically invigorating to think about life from a world of sub-zero temperatures.

I heard a great piece of advice late last year that influenced me heavily throughout January, the gist of which I've summarised as - "think not about what you want to do or achieve, but who you want to be". I don't think I'm alone in my desire to be a person who is more productive, and more careful with how I allocate my time. Personal productivity is a topic that comes up frequently, in part due to the ever increasing demands on our time, and technology that allows for distraction. It is certainly one we've discussed in our team at work on many occasions.

In this spirit, I found an Economist article that was originally published at the start of 2018, and is still highly relevant at the start of 2019. I hope you enjoy, and please share any thoughts or comments you may have below.
