Be Noticed. Be Heard. Be Listened To.

On Monday the 3rd of December, WiBF presented our last ‘Brand You’ webinar of 2018. Our speaker Mariette Rups-Donnelly, actor, trainer of actors, and corporate trainer shared valuable tips with our participants on how to make yourself heard in the workplace. According to Mariette, whether you have 10 years of experience in the workplace, or 2 months, there are always ways to improve upon yourself, so you can become the very best you.

Speaking in business meetings, public meetings and forums, and even on the phone can be tricky and overwhelming at times, whether you are an early starter or late in your career. Mariette understands these feelings, and offered strategies that ensure you always put your best foot forward, and can say what you want to say both confidently, and effectively. In order to make yourself better seen and heard, Mariette advised to use your voice and body as tools towards presenting a confident and strong perception.

When used correctly, your voice is an instrument of influence. Monitoring how fast you are talking, your annunciation of each word, and the stress you put on each syllable can make a significant difference not only in making people listen, but also when it comes to increasing the chance of your words resulting in action.

According to Mariette, “it’s all a performance, as long as it’s authentically you.” It is not about talking louder, sitting with your shoulders back, and putting on a friendly/happy/serious tone. To present yourself well, “fake it till you make it” does not work. You cannot simply put on an air without compromising authenticity.


Success begins with simple steps:


1. Warm up your voice before an important meeting, or phone call (have a sing, or do some tongue twisters).

2. Come to the meeting early to greet others, and to find a good seat (do not sit at the back and expect to be noticed!).

3. Breathe more effectively (more oxygen to the brain allows clearer thinking).

4. Remember that tone comes from emotion. Think first of what emotion you want to achieve and communicate, then let your body follow along.

5. Feel your feet on the floor and find your centre, balance is key to feeling comfortable and being free to say what is on your mind.

While the year is coming to a close, it is never the wrong time to think about improving in your career. Mariette emphasised that sessions like these are not about fixing yourself, or changing who you are in order to gain respect. There is no cookie cutter method to make a perfect person. Rather, it is about knowing what you need to do in order to present the best possible version of yourself, so others can take notice of what makes your ideas and thinking special.

Mariette's Top 9 Tips to Improve Your Influence:

 

1. Use your voice well. If you want your voice to work with more resonance, authority, strength and volume and with better pace and tone you have to work on it consistently. Do the exercises regularly.

2. Always have space in your mouth when you speak otherwise you limit tone, resonance and volume.

3. Learn to breathe deeply and well and allow your breath to flow out with your words, as you speak.

4. A useful image is to think of having air and space around your words. “Hullo Henry/Harriet, how are you” is a great phrase to practise airflow.

5. To help manage pace and clarity use all your words fully or work to the ends of your words.

6. Do a few tongue twisters to help your articulation mechanism work more effectively: Red leather, yellow leather; unique New York, New York unique; Irish wrist watch.

7. To help your voice be more responsive to intention you need to experience your full tonal range. Play around taking your voice from high to low, do character voices when you read to children, sing.

8. Development happens in incremental steps; every week just that bit better.

9. You do not have to rush in or rush through anything. We are allowed to think. Thinking is active. Give yourself permission to take the time to think.
